Bo Burnham’s soundtrack for his Netflix special “Inside” is not eligible to compete for Best Comedy Album at the 2022 Grammys, the Recording Academy has ruled.

Despite winning the top spot on Billboard’s Comedy Album charts and reaching No. 7 on the Billboard 200, “Inside (The Songs)” will instead qualify for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media. Traditionally, this category is reserved for outstanding television and film soundtracks. The soundtrack for the film “Jojo Rabbit” is the current holder of this title.

This is the second controversial decision the Recording Academy has issued this week, following the ruling that Grammy-winning country artist Kacey Musgraves cannot submit her album “Star-Crossed” for country music categories at this year’s ceremony. Musgraves’ label wrote a letter protesting the ruling, arguing that “taking her out of the country category actually does harm to a format struggling with change and inclusivity overall.”

According to Vulture, Burnham submitted “All Eyes On Me” for Best Song Written for Visual Media, Best Pop Solo Performance, Song of the Year and Record of the Year. He also submitted “Inside (The Songs)” for Album of the Year.

“Inside” was nominated for six Emmys at the 2021 Creative Arts and Primetime ceremonies. He picked up trophies for Best Directing for a Variety Special, Outstanding Music Direction and Oustanding Writing for a Variety Special.

Reps for Burnham and the Recording Academy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
