The first reactions to Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049” are in and there seems to be a consensus — that the followup to Ridley Scott’s 1982 film is “breathtaking” and a “masterpiece.”

“‘Blade Runner 2049’ is sci-fi masterpiece; the kind of deep-cut genre film we don’t see anymore. Visually mind blowing, absolutely fantastic,” said Fandango’s Managing Editor Erik Davis. “I think this ‘Blade Runner’ is better than the original, and also proves Denis Villeneuve is the most exciting director working right now.”

It’s one of the “most mind-blowing films,” another said, while another early viewer called it a “rare sequel that actually improves on the original.”

Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Jared Leto, Dave Bautista and Ana de Armas star in the sequel to Ridley Scott’s original.

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new Blade Runner, LAPD Officer K (Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

“Blade Runner 2049” opens in theaters on Oct. 6.
