Billy Bones (Tom Hopper) recently made his return to Starz’s “Black Sails” after disappearing into the murky ocean on Season 1.
He ended up being captured and tortured by the British Navy. But, we also learned that he made a deal for his release, one in which he promised to capture and bring Flint to them.
“So, basically I go through a lot of confliction in the season,” Hopper told TheWrap during a visit to the pirate drama’s Cape Town, South Africa set.
He continued, “As I was reading the episodes, I was looking at certain scenes and thinking ‘OK, so he’s in that mindset.’ And then all of a sudden, he was holding something back later on. So, it’s quite interesting for me to play it as an actor and to try to find that little subtext in the middle of it.”
On last week’s episode, he finally came face-to-face with James Flint (Toby Stephens) for the first time since Flint confronted Bones on a letter he read and its content just before falling overboard.
After the two put on a very touching reunion for their shipmates, Bones decided to push aside the deal he made with the Royal Navy and see if Flint’s plan to deliver a young girl back to her high-ranked father in England will play out.
“There’s a lot of things he’s going to encounter,” Hopper said. “The way I like to look at it, Billy is probably keeping things under wraps. There’s more that he’s not letting on. I think he’s putting things aside for now for the good of the crew, for the good of the cause and what he knows is the right thing to do for now, but I don’t think he ever lets go of things that he’s learned.”
“Black Sails” airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. on Starz.
