Frank Capra, John Ford, John Huston and Billy Wilder will be honored with their own stamps featuring images from their most famous famous movies, the U.S. Postal Service said Wednesday.
The collection of auteur postage markers is being billed as the Great Film Directors First-Class Forever stamps.
“With these stamps, we’re bringing these filmmakers out from behind their cameras and putting them in the spotlight so that we can learn more about them,” Samuel Pulcrano, U.S. Postal Service vice president of corporate communications, said in a statement.
Capra, of course, is most famous for his salutes to the decency of the common man in films like "It's a Wonderful Life" and "It Happened One Night."
Wilder put his own acerbic imprint on American comedy with films like "Some Like it Hot" and "The Apartment."
Huston was a larger than life figure in his own right who made adventure films like "The Man Who Would Be King" alongside classic film noir pictures like "The Maltese Falcon."
Ford helped create the visual language of the western film through his collaborations with John Wayne in pictures like "The Searchers."
The four filmmakers collectively received multiple Academy Award nominations, 15 Oscars, and numerous other honors during their lifetimes. Now they're ready to conquer the U.S. mail.
