HBO has given a pilot order to the half-hour comedy “Barry” from “Saturday Night Live” alum Bill Hader, TheWrap has learned.

Hader co-wrote and will executive produce the pilot with Alex Berg (“Silicon Valley”). The comedian will star and direct as well.

The show centers on a former Marine who works as a low-rent hitman in the Midwest. Lonely and dissatisfied with his life he begrudgingly travels to Los Angeles to kill someone and ends up finding an accepting community in a group of eager hopefuls within the L.A. theater scene.

Hader recently co-created and co-starred in the IFC series “Documentary Now!” with Fred Armisen, and had a guest appearance on the Fox comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” starring fellow “SNL” alum Andy Samberg.
