Ben Foster will join Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale in "Contraband," Universal's English-language remake of the 2008 Icelandic film "Reykjavic-Rotterdam," an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap.
Aaron Guzikowski wrote the script, which follows a former smuggler (Wahlberg) trying to go straight as a night guard. He's dragged back for one more job when the brother-in-law who got him the job botches a smuggling run and the guard's life is threatened.
Foster will play Wahlberg's best friend and right-hand man who helps him take on the dangerous job.
Baltasar Kormakur is directing and producing the film, having starred in, co-wrote and produced the original.
Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are also producing along with Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson.
Foster will soon be seen teaming with Jason Statham in CBS Films' remake of the Charles Bronson movie "The Mechanic." The fiery Foster is currently filming "Rampart" under the direction of Oren Moverman, who the actor previously worked with on "The Messenger."
Foster is represented by WME and manager Ken Jacobson.
