Ben Affleck Battles Alcoholism and Coaches Basketball in ‘The Way Back’ Trailer (Video)

Gavin O’Connor directs drama in theaters March 6, 2020

Ben Affleck reteams with his director on “The Accountant” Gavin O’Connor for his latest film, “The Way Back.” This time, though, he’s not a mild-mannered math whiz battling super spies. Instead, he’s forced to fight his own alcoholism.

“The Way Back” is a sobering and inspirational turn for Affleck, in which he plays Jack Cunningham, a former high school basketball phenom struggling with alcohol addiction and gets the opportunity to coach his old high school team. In trying to get them back on the winning path, he might be able to find his own redemption.

“I spent a lot of time hurting myself. I made a lot of bad decisions. I have a lot of regrets,” Affleck says in the trailer. “You guys earned this tonight.”

Warner Bros. in association with BRON Creative is releasing the film, which features a cast that includes Al Madrigal, Michaela Watkins, Janina Gavankar and Glynn Turman.

Gordon Gray, Jennifer Todd, Gavin O’Connor and Ravi Mehta produced the film, from a screenplay written by Brad Ingelsby. Robert J. Dohrmann, Brad Ingelsby, Kevin McCormick, Mark Ciardi, Aaron L. Gilbert, Jason Cloth, Kaitlyn Taafe Cronholm and Madison Ainley serve as executive producers.

“The Way Back” opens in theaters Mar. 6, 2020.
