BBC to Adapt Philip Pullman’s ‘His Dark Materials’ Into TV Series

Bestselling YA series was last made into a movie starring Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman

Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” is getting another adaptation after a less than successful attempt at a blockbuster, in the 2006 film starring Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman.

New Line Cinema and Bad Wolf will produce the series for the UK’s BBC One network.

“I’m delighted with the BBC announcement this morning,” the books’ author Philip Pullman tweeted on Tuesday. “And now the work begins!”

The new series was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, controller of BBC One, and Polly Hill, controller of BBC Drama Commissioning.

“It is an honour to be bringing Philip Pullman’s extraordinary novels to BBC One,” said Hill in a statement. “His Dark Materials is a stunning trilogy, and a drama event for young and old – a real family treat that shows our commitment to original and ambitious storytelling.”

“His Dark Materials” consists of three novels, “Northern Lights” (published as “The Golden Compass” in North America), “The Subtle Knife” and “The Amber Spyglass” and follows protagonist Lyra navigating a world where science, theology and magic are entwined.

The new series will be executive produced by Pullman, Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner for Bad Wolf, Toby Emmerich and Carolyn Blackwood for New Line Cinema, Bethan Jones for BBC One and Deborah Forte for Scholastic, which publishes the books.
