BBC Reporter Shot in Head Undergoes Successful Surgery

Jeremy Bowen was hit by shotgun pellets in Egypt but still met his deadline

BBC Middle East editor Jeremy Bowen, who was shot in the head while reporting on protests in Cairo on July 5, made it successfully through surgery to remove the shotgun pellets.

On July 11, Bowen tweeted that the operation was done, the pellets were removed and thanked all for their concern. He told a follower that he planned to spend the rest of the day watching cricket and recovering.

That's a bit different from how he spent his time immediately after being shot: After a quick break to have his wounds bandaged, he went back to work, getting his report together in time for that night's newscast. He then returned to England for medical treatment, bemoaning the fact that a visit to his surgeon prevented him from doing more reporting.

Bowen also tweeted that he was "slightly disappointed" that the shotgun pellets still embedded in his head didn't set off any airport metal detectors.
