Awkwafina’s Comedy Central Series Gets a Title – Will Debut in January 2020

Natasha Lyonne among the directors for 10-episode comedy

Comedy Central has given a title to its upcoming scripted series starring Awkwafina.

The series will be called “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens.”

The half-hour scripted comedy is loosely based on Awkwafina’s (real name Nora Lum) real-life growing up in Flushing, which is a section of Queens. Raised by her Dad (BD Wong) and Grandma (Lori Tan Chinn) alongside her cousin (Bowen Yang), Nora leans on her family as she navigates life and young adulthood in outer borough-NYC.

The network also announced that Natasha Lyonne, Lucia Aniello, Jamie Babbit, The Daniels, Steven Tsuchida and Anu Valia will direct episodes of the series, which will debut in January 2020.

Awkwafina co-wrote the Lucia Aniello-directed pilot with Karey Dornetto and Teresa Hsiao. Awkwafina, Dornetto, Aniello are executive producers alongside Peter Principato and Itay Reiss of Artists First. Hsiao is co-executive producer, while Monika Zielinska, Adam Londy and Rachel Olson are executives in charge for Comedy Central.

Awkwafina broke out last year with starring roles in “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Oceans 8.” She is set to star in upcoming films “Jumanji: The Next Level,” “The Little Mermaid” and Marvel Studios’ “Shang Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings.”
