Going into “Avengers: Endgame,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe cast wants fans to know they didn’t start all these problems — but they are trying to solve them.
And to make that clear, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Brie Larson, Danai Gurira, Karen Gillan, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle and Paul Rudd assembled on Monday’s “Tonight Show” to recap a decade’s worth of MCU drama set to the tune of Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Star the Fire.”
Of course because this is his NBC late-night show, Jimmy Fallon got to join in, too.
“Tony Stark, Iron Man/Nick Fury has a plan/Big shock, Pepper Potts/Arc reactor core,” the team sings, kicking off the comic-book style parody music video with a very brief description of the first “Iron Man” movie.
Then things start to really speed up, just as Joel’s song does: “Asgard, ancient war/Loki and his brother Thor/Bruce Banner, radiation, transformation/Coulson and Maria Hill/They’re the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D./Clint Barton, Hawkeye/Black Widow, Russian Spy/Captain Rogers, World War II/Bucky, Peggy, I love you/First Avenger, here we go/Everyone assemble!”
Some stars can keep up with the speedy lyrics better than others. Yeah, we’re looking at you, Rudd, who appeared to be out of breath almost immediately.
“We didn’t start the fire/It was always burning since the world’s been turning/We didn’t start the fire/ No, we didn’t light it, but we’re trying to fight it,” the group promises — on and on and on and on.
