A24 has acquired the U.S. rights to Mike Mills’ “20th Century Women,” the company announced Wednesday.

The comedy focuses on three women, each from a different era in the 20th century, who come together to teach one’s son about life and love, sex and freedom, men and women.

The film stars Annette Bening as Dorothea, the mother of the boy. The cast will also include Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, Billy Crudup and newcomer Lucas Jade Zumann.

It is produced by Megan Ellison of Annapurna Pictures, Anne Carey of Archer Gray and Youree Henley.

“From a filmmakers’ perspective, it’s a dream come true to work with both Annapurna and now A24” said Mills in a statement, “especially with a film that is in many ways a portrait to the real women who raised me.”

“Mike Mills has written and directed a deeply moving, transcendent vision about the people we love and our place in the world,” the company said. “With truly unforgettable performances and a meticulous sense of time and place, ’20th Century Women’ is an iconic mother-son story that we know will resonate strongly with wide audiences.”

Mills is best known for directing “Beginners” and “Thumbsucker.”

“20th Century Women” is eyeing a late 2016 release.
