Angie Stone, the prominent soul singer who was best known for her hit “Wish I Didn’t Miss You,” died Saturday in a car crash. She was 63.
Following her tragic death, her family traveled to Montgomery, Alabama, where the accident occurred and they are preparing a statement, her agent told TheWrap.
Though the 2001 single was her most famous, Stone released 10 solo records and was nominated for three Grammys throughout her expansive career, which further included movies as well as co-founding The Sequence. She also won two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards.
In a 2023 interview with R&B Junkie Stone revealed she was “pretty done with the music industry” before recording her 10th album, “Love Language.” But “people wanted to hear more” from her, she continued, “and so everybody started comparing it to Mahogany Soul and their favorite album and one thing, it’s very hard to duplicate a previous work, so I just went in the mindset of treating it like it’s your first record and that’s what I did with this album.”
The singer worked with her son, Swayvo Twain, for the album’s song “Old Thang Back,” and she said the two came up with a song that was “kind of reminiscent of when we did neo-soul originally.”
Her 2001 hit “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” was nominated for a Grammy after release. Though she didn’t win, Stone remained focused on her work and her roots in the industry. While speaking to “The Breakfast Club” in 2020 Stone explained, “I was self-taught. I was hungry, I was thirsty, I was ambitious.”
“It’s having that bug that say, ‘I’m a rubber band. You can stretch me but I won’t pop. I’m going to always do me.’”
Born Angela Laverne Stone on December 18, 1961, the singer first began to sing gospel music at her church. She formed the rap trio The Sequence with Cheryl Cook and Gwendolyn Chisolm in the late 1970s at the age of 16.
After the group disbanded in 1985 Stone worked with Mantonix before joining Vertical Hold as the group’s lead vocalist. She launched her solo career in the 1990s and released several hits, including the albums “Mahogany Soul,” “Stone Love” and “The Art of Love & War.”
Angie Stone is survived by her daughter Diamond and her son Michael.
