Angelina Jolie Makes First Public Appearance Since Revealing Double Masectomy

The actress who wrote a stunning op-ed column, "My Medical Choice," joined Brad Pitt on the red carpet for "World War Z" premiere

Angelina Jolie made her first public appearance after revealing her preventative double mastectomy in the New York Times in May — and it was a tearjerker.

The actress, activist and mother of six joined Brad Pitt at the London premiere of his summer film “World War Z” on Sunday. Hundreds of fans came along to show their support, and Jolie snapped photos and signed autographs for 20 minutes, according to reports.

“I’ve been very happy to see the discussion of women’s health expanded and that means the world to me,” an emotional Jolie told reporters. “I am so grateful to have my health. And after losing my mom to these issues, I’m very grateful for it. I’ve been very moved by the support from people,” she said.

Jolie’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died from ovarian cancer in 2007 at age 56. Jolie’s aunt, 61-year-old Debbie Martin, passed away last week from breast cancer.

Jolie's doctors told her that she had an 87 percent chance of getting breast cancer and a 50 percent chance of ovarian cancer. She underwent three months of medical procedures involving masectomies from February to April. Jolie said that she will have her ovaries removed in the future.
