As the world prepares to bid adieu to curmudgeonly "60 Minutes" commentator Andy Rooney, CBS released a sneak peek at Rooney's final regular night on "60 Minutes," which will offer both an interview with Rooney and his last installment of "A Few Minutes With Andy Rooney."
The takeaway from Rooney's interview with Safer? If you run onto him on the street, don't bother asking him for his John Hancock.
Safer starts the exchange by pointing out that the on-air Rooney and the everyday Rooney are one in the same.
“I say he’s exactly like that,” Safer says, describing what he tells people when they ask about Rooney. “I’ve been out with you, just walking the street and people come up asking for an autograph.”
"Oh, what kind of an idiot wants my name on a piece of paper?” the 92-year-old Rooney replies. “I still [don’t sign them] and I have no intention of stopping. I just don’t sign autographs."
Wise move. After all, a man Rooney's age could really hurt himself carrying around a stone slab and a chisel to sign autographs with.
