‘American Idol,’ ‘Empire’ Get Premiere Dates From Fox

Wednesdays are becoming the network’s music night

Prepare for an early 2015 double dose of music on Fox Wednesdays.

“American Idol” returns for its 14th season with a two-night, three-hour premiere event on Wednesday, Jan. 7 (8 p.m. ET/PT) and Thursday, Jan. 8 (8 p.m. ET/PT) on Fox. The audition rounds will come from Kansas City, Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans, New York and San Francisco.

On the first night, new series “Empire” will follow “Idol” at 9 p.m. The music-based drama centers on a family hip-hop dynasty and features tracks by legendary producer Timbaland. The series stars Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson.

“Idol” is produced by FremantleMedia North America and 19 Entertainment, a division of Core Media Group. The series was created by Simon Fuller. Ryan Seacrest returns as host and Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. are back as judges.

“Empire” is from Imagine Television in association with 20th Century Fox Television. The series is created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, who wrote the pilot together. The two executive produce the series along with, Brian Grazer, Ilene Chaiken and Francie Calfo.

Daniels directed the “Empire” pilot.
