AMC Picks Up Pilot for Railroad Drama ‘Hell on Wheels’

Western is AMC’s sixth straight pilot to get a series order

AMC announced a full series order Wednesday for “Hell on Wheels,” a post-Civil War drama about a former Confederate soldier whose pursuit of vengeance leads him West to work on the first Transcontinental Railroad.

The series is created, written and executive prodced by Joe and Tony Gayton ("Faster," "Uncommon Valor," "Salton Sea," "Bulletproof.")

"We are thrilled to bring ‘Hell on Wheels’ to series,” said Joel Stillerman, AMC’s senior vice president of original programming, production and digital content. “AMC's commitment to the western is long standing, and the genre is an important part of our brand and history as a channel. This show has some incredibly original twists and turns and a contemporary sensibility that we think will bring a very broad audience to our newest drama series."

The show is AMC's sixth straight pilot to become a series, and returns the network to Westerns: It previoulsy aired the hit miniseries "Broken Trail."
