Amazon Studios is developing a comedy series titled “Overcompensating” from comedian Benito Skinner (known by his social media persona Benny Drama), singer-songwriter Charli XCX (who will executive produce and spearhead music), Jonah Hill’s Strong Baby production company and A24.
Loosely based on creator and executive producer Skinner’s real life, “Overcompensating” follows Idaho football player Benny as he struggles to accept his sexuality in college, finding himself overcompensating as he tries to convince himself of something he’s not. Billed as an ensemble comedy, the poignant, personal and humorous tale explores shared experiences in navigating identity, the various personalities we try out along the way and the journey to find the people who accept us just as we are.
Skinner is best known for his online comedy, where he does celebrity impressions and viral skits across digital platforms like TikTok and YouTube. Also an actor, he portrayed Jack Cole Jordan on “Queer as Folk,” has appeared on Showtime’s “Ziwe” and “Search Party.” He previously collaborated with Charli XCX on her “New Shapes” music video, which also features Christine and the Queens and Caroline Polachek.
Skinner was also in the podcast series “Electric Easy,” from creator Vanya Asher (“Shadow and Bone”) and executive producer Kesha, starring Chloe Bailey and Mason Gooding in a music neo-noir sci-fi love story. Next up, he’ll be seen in Chelsea Peretti’s directorial debut “First Time Female Director.” He’s repped by WME.
Charli XCX is a Grammy-nominated hyperpop artist. She’s been a musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” twice and cemented her first U.K. No. 1 with album “Crash,” which was released in March. She’s collaborated with the likes of BTS, Troye Sivan, Icona Pop, Carly Rae Jepson and Tove Lo.
