Amazon became the latest outfit to distance itself from the still-unfolding Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment scandal, severing ties with The Weinstein Company on Friday and canceling an in-development series from David O. Russell that was set to star Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore.
Russell, De Niro and Moore confirmed the news in a statement, saying, “We support Amazon’s decision as In light of recent news and out of respect for all those affected we have decided together that it is best to not move forward with this show.”
The decision follows the day after Amazon said it was mulling over options on the untitled drama, as well as on “The Romanoffs,” a Matthew Weiner-produced anthology series about people who believe they are descendants of the Russian royal family deposed in 1917. A representative for Weiner referred TheWrap’s request for comment to Amazon, who did not immediately respond regarding that show’s future.
The end of the Amazon partnership with TWC comes as the streaming weathers its own crisis. On Thursday, Amazon Studios head Roy Price was placed on indefinite leave of absence amid accusations of sexual harassment.
