Glenn Howerton’s “Always Sunny” character Dennis will “be in most episodes” this coming season, Rob McElhenney promised Friday — but that won’t stop the gang from having a good laugh about everyone freaking out over Dennis’ fate.
“It’s funny, it’s like, we’re not really going out of our way to keep it a secret,” McElhenney, the show’s creator, said at a Television Critics Association panel on Friday.
“We’re not doing anything, it’s just sort of unraveling. We’re just not posting pictures of him. That’s all. We haven’t said anything,” co-star Kaitlin Olson added. “People are so mad at us.”
The questions about Howerton’s fate started in March 2017, when he told TheWrap he wasn’t sure if he would return to the show.
“It’s definitely not a foregone conclusion that I won’t be coming back,” he said at the time. Howerton also stars on an NBC show, “AP Bio.”
The “Always Sunny” crew fueled speculation by posting photos with Mindy Kaling taking Howerton’s usual spot, as if it was no big deal.
“It happened because we wanted to do an episode where we were gonna replace Dennis, and we felt like she was a worthy adversary,” McElhenney explained.
Olson added that Kaling caught a bunch of crap over appearing in that photo.
Sorry, Mindy — the Internet is awful.
