“Gravity,” the new film from “Y tu mama tambien” director Alfonso Cuaron, will hold its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on Aug. 28.
Two of Cuaron’s last three films, “Y tu mama tambien” and “Children of Men,” both screened at the festival in competition and took home awards. Though “Gravity” will not be in competition, it will be the first 3D film to open the festival.
Cuaron’s deep space thriller stars Sandra Bullock as Dr. Ryan Stone, a medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, and George Clooney as Matt Kowalsky, a savvy astronaut. As the two are on a routine space walk, the shuttle is destroyed and the two are abandoned in the bottomless black and disquieting silence of space.

Cuaron wrote the film with his son Jonas and produced it with David Heyman, who produced the “Harry Potter” films. Cuaron directed “Harry Potter & the Prisoner o Azkaban,” the third film in that franchise.
Cuaron, who earned Oscar nominations for both “Y tu mama tambien” an “Children of Men,” has not directed a film since the latter, which opened in 2006. Since then, he has produced a pair of films, “Year of the Nail” and “Rudo y Cursi.” He also created a TV series, “Believe,” which will debut on NBC after the 2014 Winter Olympics.
“Gravity” opens in theaters October 4.
