Former "Gilmore Girls" star Alexis Bledel has signed on to join Saoirse Ronan in Geoffrey Fletcher's directorial debut "Violet and Daisy," the actress' publicist has confirmed to TheWrap.
The indie drama follows a pair of teenage assassins who are lured into what is supposed to be another quick and easy job, only to find that their intended target is not quite who they expected.
James Gandolfini recently joined the cast of the movie, which was initially described as a cross between "Thelma and Louise," "Superbad" and "Pulp Fiction." Lofty ambitions to be sure.
Ronan should be well-prepared for the role, having recently wrapped Joe Wright's "Hanna," which also concerns a teenage assassin. I guess they're just in vogue after Chloe Moretz's Hit-Girl became the breakout character from Matthew Vaughn's "Kick-Ass."
The 29-year-old Bledel may be 13 years younger than her Oscar-nominated co-star, but her youthful looks should help her pull off her role as a violent teen. She replaces Carey Mulligan, who was originally attached to star but has since moved on to Nicolas Winding Refn's "Drive," which will be filming at the same time as Fletcher's project, which begins production next week in New York.
Magic Violet and GreeneStreet Films are financing and producing the project.
Fletcher will also produce with Bonnie Timmermann, while GreenStreet's John Penotti will exec produce and Steve Kempf will co-produce.
Bledel is best known on the big screen for starring in "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and its sequel, as well as "Sin City." She will soon be seen in Robert Redford's "The Conspirator," which will not be released in time for awards consideration this year.
"Precious" screenwriter Fletcher surprised Hollywood when he won last year's Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar over "Up in the Air" 'co-writers' Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner.
Bledel is represented by CAA and New Wave Entertainment, and her casting was first reported by Variety.
