In the wake of a mass-shooting at a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Colorado Friday morning, New York City police are increasing security at movie theaters showing the superhero sequel.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said that there will now be a police presence at theaters throughout the city.
"As a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons in the wake of the horrendous shooting in Colorado, the New York City Police Department is providing coverage at theaters where the 'The Dark Knight Rises' is playing in the five boroughs," Kelly said in a statement.
The shooting in Aurora, Colorado killed 12 people and reportedly left 38 injured.
At a news conference, Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates told reporters that a suspect is in custody. Police identified the suspect as 24-year-old James Holmes of Aurora. Police said he was carrying a knife, a rifle and a handgun when arrested, and one other gun was recovered from the theater. The gunman was also wearing a bulletproof vest and did not resist arrest.
