Elle Fanning Shines in New Trailer for Transgender Coming of Age Drama ‘3 Generations’ (Video)

On Thursday, The Weinstein Company decided to challenge the MPAA’s R-rating of the film

Just a few days after The Weinstein Company decided to protest the MPAA’s R-rating of their film, “3 Generations,” it released a new trailer for the project starring Elle Fanning and Naomi Watts.

“I was raised in New York by my mom, my mom’s mom and my mom’s mom’s girlfriend,” Fanning, who plays Ray in the film, says in the trailer.

“The hardest part of my day is knowing everybody still sees me as a girl,” she adds.

“3 Generations” follows Fanning as a transgender teenage boy, with Watts playing his mother and Susan Sarandon as his grandmother, who is a lesbian. The film was previously titled “About Ray.” It is directed by Gaby Dellal.

On Thursday, TWC decided to challenge the MPAA’s R-rating for the transgender family drama, which they rated “R” due to language including sexual references.

The Weinstein Company enlisted Hollywood lawyer David Boies, who has consulted on numerous human rights issues for TWC including the censorship of Oscar-nominated film “Carol,” as well as the previous protest of the MPAA’s rating of the documentary “Bully.” “Bully” initially received an R-rating from the MPAA for similar reasons but eventually brought its rating down to PG-13.

“3 Generations” will be released in select theaters on May 5.
