While 2016 saw some kickass superhero movies that blew away fans (and the box office), there were also some duds that left some grumbling. Here the year’s releases ranked from worst to best.
6. “Suicide Squad”
DC Comics’ supervillain mashup was easily the worst of the bunch, with an atrocious villain (Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress) who did a wiggle dance and defied logic.
5. “X-Men: Apocalypse”
Speaking of underwhelming villains, Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse in “X-Men: Apocalypse” left fans wanting more. However, some of the mutants still managed to literally shine, such as Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey.
4. “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”
Had Warner Bros. released the ultimate cut of “Batman v Superman” in theaters, the film would have ranked higher on this list. Sadly they didn’t — and it’s not.
3. “Captain America: Civil War”
This “Avengers”-like sequel dazzled audiences with its tight plotting and numerous set pieces while introducing the Black Panther, Giant Man and Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
2. “Doctor Strange”
Marvel’s big gamble paid off and “Doctor Strange” successfully introduced audiences to the magical side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It also finally launched Benedict Cumberbatch into leading man territory with his portrayal of the Sorcerer Supreme.
1. “Deadpool”
The R-rated Ryan Reynolds vehicle managed to not only set the stage for superhero movies earlier this year, but successfully launched the careers of both its filmmakers (led by director Tim Miller) and kickoff a new franchise for 20th Century Fox.
