16-Year-Old Climate and Racial Justice Advocate Isra Hirsi to Be Honored as Voice of the Future (Video)

Power Women Summit 2019: Co-founder and executive director of U.S. Youth Climate Strike will be recognized for her work on climate change

Isra Hirsi, a leading teen climate and racial justice advocate, will receive the Voice of the Future Award at WrapWomen’s Power Women Summit, to be held at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica on October 24-25.

Singer, songwriter and actress Becky G. will present the award to Hirsi, a 16-year-old high school student from Minneapolis, Minn., who has devoted herself to intersectionality and diversity within the climate justice movement. She led the organization of hundreds of strikes across the country to protest inaction on climate change on March 15 and May 3 of this year.

Hirsi began her climate activism her freshman year of high school by joining her school environmental club. In January 2019, at 15, she co-founded the U.S. Youth Climate Strike, which now has 100-plus organizers. The high school student, who is both Muslim and African American, spearheaded hundreds of strikes across the country this past spring in solidarity with Swedish teen environmental activist Greta Thunberg.
