The season 1 finale of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” lands this week. Good news for fans, though–there will be a Season 2. But there’s so much we have to learn about the show’s terrifying, and terrifyingly plausible dystopia. Here are all of the questions we’d like answered in the finale.
Will June and Luke be reunited?
We found out in Episode 6 that Luke (O-T Fagbenle), June’s (Elizabeth Moss) husband before Gilead, survived after all, and escaped into Canada. After three years he finally receives a smuggled message from June urging him to “find Hannah,” their missing daughter. Will they make contact again?
Will we learn the fate of Hannah?
We know Gilead takes the children of women it forces to become handmaids, including Hannah, (Jordana Blake) June’s daughter. But where do those children go? Are they adopted by commanders? Sold to other countries as part of Gilead’s trade policy? We need to know.
What is Mayday?
So far we know little about “Mayday” except that, according to two other handmaids, it’s a resistance movement of some kind. Is it related to the ongoing war? Is it real, or a 1984-style trap? As of episode nine, June may have successfully joined, so hopefully we’ll know more soon.
What is in that package?
In episode 9, June got the chance to join Mayday by retrieving a package from Jezebel’s, the illegal nightclub staffed by enslaved women and patronized by Gilead’s most powerful men. June failed, but Moira, a Jezebel’s slave, smuggled the package to her through a butcher. What is it, and how will it help Mayday?
Is Moira off to save June?
After Moira (Samira Wiley) gets the package to June, she kills a “client” at Jezebel’s and escapes in a stolen van. Where is she going? Will she try to go save June and then hightail it for Canada? Or will she try to go find Hannah first?
What exactly are the “colonies?”
The colonies are still-unspecified places for political prisoners, so terrible that even life as a sex slave at Jezebels is considered preferable. What are they, and what are people forced to do there?
What will happen to Janine?
Poor Janine (Madeline Brewer). In Episode 9, she decided death was better than life in Gilead and jumped off a bridge. But at the end of the episode, we learn she survived the fall. Uh oh. The last time Janine resisted, her eye was gouged out. What will happen to her now?
Does Serena Joy find out about The Commander and June?
Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) has escalated things with June from late-night Scrabble to trips to Jezebels. That’s widespread, but highly illegal behavior in Gilead and Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) will likely be furious if she finds out — especially since the Waterfords’ previous handmaid killed herself, with the Commander implied to be at fault.
What happens between Nick and June?
As part of her struggle to survive, June strikes up a risky affair with Nick (Max Minghella), Commander Waterford’s driver and member of the secret police. Nick seems to be jealous — or at least wary — about June and the Commander. Will he turn her in, or keep the secret? And will they continue their affair?
Will we see Ofglen again?
June’s first friend in Gilead, fellow handmaid Ofglen (Alexis Bledel) was also a member of Mayday, until she was tortured and genitally mutilated after being outed as a “gender traitor” — in other words, a lesbian. She was last seen in episode 5, when she snapped, stole a truck, ran over several Gilead soldiers, then was arrested and taken away in one of their ever-present black vans. Was she executed? Or will she make a reappearance before the end of Season 1?
