Mayall, whose other television roles included “Blackadder,” “The New Statesman” and “Bottom,” was married with three children.

“The Young Ones” featured Mayall and his comedy partner Adrian “Ade” Edmondson, in a story about four undergraduate students who shared a house. Edmondson played violent punk Vyvyan, while Nigel Planer played hippie Neil and Christopher Ryan played suave-but-shady Mike. After airing on BBC2, the series gained popularity in the United States when it aired as one of MTV’s early examples of non-music programming.
