Good morning, and welcome to the robocalypse.
HBO released the official trailer for Season 2 of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s “Westworld” on Thursday, giving fans their first real look into the sophomore installment since that badass Super Bowl Sunday ad aired back in January.
Oh, and we’ve finally seen Shogun World, and it’s everything you dreamed of and more.
The 2 minute and 40 second video opens with a shot of Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) waking upon on a beach, and cuts to a conversation he’s having with Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood).
“I dreamt I was on an ocean. You and the others in the distant shore,” he says. When she asks him what it means he replies, “Dreams don’t mean anything, Dolores. That answer doesn’t seem to satisfy you.” “Because it’s not completely honest,” she responds.
Yeah, it looks like Dolores is about to start rethinking some things.
“Did you ever stop to wonder about your actions?” she asks a captive on the outskirts of the park, in another scene. “The price you’d have to pay if there was a reckoning? That reckoning is here.”
Back in what looks like Escalante, Delos Destinations employees and Bernard are wandering through a sea of bodies. “Up until this point, the stakes were never real,” we hear the Man in Black (Ed Harris) say in a voiceover. “But now, you and the rest of your kind are free.”
Cut to Maeve (Thandie Newton), who learns from Lee Sizemore (Simon Quarterman) that her daughter has been reprogrammed and “isn’t real” — and that doesn’t sit well with her.
In another timeline — obviously — William (Jimmi Simpson) has his beloved Dolores naked on a chair inside the lab with that same dazed look on her face we always see when a host is powered down.
Other shockers in the clip include the MiB riding away from the wrecked body of the Young Ford host, Maeve taking to Shogun World like she owns the place, and Teddy (James Marsden) at Dolores’ side as she begins her battle. But honestly, we could pick this thing apart for days and still miss something.
The trailer closes with Bernard telling Dolores she frightens him sometimes. “Why on Earth would you ever be frightened of me?” she asks so sweetly it gives us chills.
And if you thought you recognized Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box” in the background during all of this, you’d be right. The show’s composer, Ramin Djawadi, reimagined the song for the trailer.
