Twitter reportedly plans to take links and photos out of its 140-character count, giving consumers more freedom to craft longer tweets.

According to Bloomberg, “the change could happen in the next two weeks.” Currently, links take up 23 characters, even if Twitter shortens them.

“We don’t comment on rumors or speculation,” a Twitter spokesperson told TheWrap.

In January, CEO Jack Dorsey said that the company was trying to find new ways for consumers to have more flexibility on the site and for text to be displayed on the social media platform. The company wanted to experiment with how people use Twitter, and Dorsey noted that many already took screenshots of longer messages or posted several tweets in a row to bypass the 140-character limit.

Bloomberg also reported in January that the character count in tweets could be raised to 10,000, a tweet that would equate to a 20-minute speech in length.

In August, Twitter removed the 140-character limit for direct messages.

The word limit was originally adopted by the social media platform because it was a way to fit information within an SMS message in 2006, before smartphones came to exist.
