Actor James Woods, a conservative and Donald Trump supporter, is known for mixing it up on Twitter, calling out #liberals and sharing his political beliefs in less-than-polite terms. In the wake of news that protesters had pulled down a Confederate statue Monday in Durham, North Carolina, he took to Twitter to complain about liberals complaining.
He probably didn’t expect to get ruthlessly trolled with his own words, though.
Woods tried to make a poignant point about defacing monuments with one ill-considered tweet. Without considering the context that Confederate monuments are literally monuments to traitors who fought a war against their own country to preserve the ability to enslave other human beings, he took liberals to task with hyperbole.
Woods suggested the next target of #liberals would be the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. Of course, pulling down a statute celebrating slave ownership in the wake of a white supremacists march and violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, would logically lead to attacking a monument from a war that was specifically about fighting fascism.
Here’s the tweet:

Within moments, though, Twitter did what Twitter does best: Turn an ill-conceived comment into a ruthless gag. Copying Woods’ own words, Twitter users started picking their own monuments to save from the statue-destroying mob of #liberals. The suggestions got ridiculous in a hurry.
