Tower of Power Bassist in ICU After 2 Band Members Struck by Train

Marc van Wageningen got the worst of Oakland Amtrak incident

Two members of the band Tower of Power were struck by an Amtrak train yesterday while walking back from their hotel to a gig.

Bassist Marc van Wageningen remains in intensive care, TheWrap has learned. Drummer David Garibaldi had less severe injuries.

“In an unfortunate accident tonight, two members of the award-winning group Tower Of Power, drummer David Garibaldi and current bassist Marc van Wageningen, were struck by a train in California,” their publicist Jeremy Westby told us. “Both men are responsive and being treated at a local hospital in Oakland.”

Westby also forwarded us this note from bandleader Emilio Castillo: “I was at the hospital last night and saw David but Marc was in intensive care and I wasn’t able to see him. Dave’s head and face were pretty swollen and bruised but he was lucid and expected to recover. Marc came through surgery well; his internal bleeding was stopped and they were waiting for him to stabilize in order to do further testing. The doctors were cautiously optimistic. We appreciate the responses and prayers from our former bandmates, friends, and fans and we all remain hopeful and in prayer.”

Castillo added that Garibaldi looked like he came out on the losing end of a bad fight. In addition to his internal bleeding, van Wageningen broke ribs.

The band was scheduled to perform last night at Yoshi’s in Oakland, but their show was canceled, per the venue’s website. Westby said he presumes more cancellations are to come, though the band’s next show isn’t until January 18.

Amtrak did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment on the incident.
