Todd Haynes’ ‘Wonderstruck’: First Footage, Poster Debut Before Cannes Premiere (Video)

“Carol” filmmaker’s latest is based on Brian Selznick’s 2011 illustrated novel, and stars Julianne Moore and Michelle Williams

Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions have dropped a first-look clip and poster for Todd Haynes’ coming-of-age drama “Wonderstruck,” ahead of its debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18.

The filmmaker’s follow-up to his lesbian romance “Carol,” which also premiered at the festival, is based on Brian Selznick’s acclaimed 2011 illustrated novel about two deaf children (Oakes Fegley and Millie Simmonds) from two separate eras who secretly wish their lives were different.

Frequent Haynes collaborator Julianne Moore co-stars, alongside Michelle Williams.

The clip sets up how Haynes pivots between the two time periods in the film: one is shot in color, the other in black-and-white. Both children appear at New York’s American Museum of Natural History in the scene.

“Wonderstruck” will be the first Competition title to screen at Cannes this year. Other films vying for the Palme d’Or include Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled” and Michael Haneke’s latest Isabelle Huppert collaboration, “Happy End.”

Haynes’ last film, “Carol,” was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Actress (Cate Blanchett) and Best Supporting Actress (Rooney Mara).

“Wonderstruck” opens in select U.S. theaters October 20, 2017.
