Big game gets to 100.7 million viewers when counting a bunch of other platforms

Super Bowl LIII received 98.2 million viewers on CBS, according to Nielsen, marking the first time since 2009 the big game hasn’t surpassed 100 million viewers. That TV-only total was down 5 percent from last year’s comparable measurement.

Sunday’s New England Patriots’ victory over the Los Angeles Rams was the least-viewed (at least, using just over-the-air broadcast numbers) Super Bowl since 2008, when the annual event brought 97.4 million viewers to Fox. In 2009, Super Bowl XLIII racked up 98.7 million viewers on NBC proper.

When you add in data from multiple streaming platforms, last night’s underwhelming game tallied 100.7 million viewers. That is still down 5 percent from 2018’s comparable figures.

Last year’s Super Bowl LII had 103.4 million viewers on just NBC alone, a total that grew to 106 million when factoring in additional platforms. That larger number included viewing on NBCSports.com, the NBC Sports app, NBC.com “TV Everywhere,’” Universo, En Vivo app, NFL.com, NFL Mobile from Verizon, the Yahoo Sports app, and go90.

Super Bowl LII broadcast on NBC was down 7 percent in viewers from the prior year — 2017 — on Fox.

Sunday’s 100.7 million sum counts a bunch of streaming platforms, like CBS Television Network, CBS Interactive, NFL digital properties, Verizon Media mobile properties and ESPN Deportes television and digital properties.

A few million more eyeballs will be tallied when out-of-home viewers are added in later this week. That new (at least in terms of turnaround time) metric increased NBC’s 2018 boast to 118.2 million viewers, for an example of how much of a boost the game could see when those stats come in.
