At the top of “The Late Show” on Wednesday, Stephen Colbert took a jaundiced look at the investigation into how Trump senior adviser (and son-in-law) Jared Kushner received top secret security clearance.

Last week, the New York Times reported that Trump ordered his chief of staff to give Kushner security clearance despite repeated objections from intelligence officials. Trump denied the report, and has refused demands by House Democrats to turn over documents related to Kushner’s clearance.

Colbert noted that according to the Times, Kushner had to update his application for clearance several times because he failed to mention meetings with foreign representatives. “But you know what they say,” joked Colbert. “If at first you don’t succeed, remind them that you’re married to the president’s daughter.”

Colbert then joked that ordering officials to give Kushner clearance was “one of the few Trump orders that did not end with ‘and a side of fries.’”

Finally, Colbert noted that according to the Times, Trump’s then-chief of staff John Kelly wrote “a contemporaneous internal memo” in which he stated that he was “ordered” to give top secret clearance to Kushner.

“It’s all going to be in his White House tell-all, ‘Siiigh’,” Colbert joked. Watch the clip below:
