‘SNL’: Watch Dana Carvey Return as Church Lady to Rant About Election: ‘Jesus Is Not On the Ballot’ (Video)

Carvey’s Church Lady popped up on “SNL” Weekend Update for a discussion about politics, homosexuals and HBO’s “Westworld”

“Well, isn’t that special?”

One of the most iconic characters in “SNL” history, Dana Carvey’s “Church Lady,” made a fantastic comeback on tonight’s episode during “Weekend Update” with Colin Jost and Michael Che. With the presidential election on everybody’s mind, Jost prompted Church Lady to talk about it a little bit and she did not disappoint.

“Well, we have a tough choice on Tuesday, don’t we, Colin? Do we vote for a bitter female android from the ’90s or a riverboat gambler with a big tummy and an orange head?”

You can catch the full Church Lady bit at the top of the post.

When Jost asked if she’d decided on a candidate to vote for, she replied in typical fashion: “Well, Jesus is not on the ballot, Colin. I suppose he’s not part of your life either, is he? Because like everyone else in Hollywood you’re a homosexual.”

“I’m actually not gay,” Jost replied, which amused Church Lady.

“You do good jokes, Colin. Seriously, that’s really funny. Stay there. Stay in the cupboard.”

After complaining about a whole bunch of other stuff, Jost decided to shift the conversation by asking what Church Lady actually does like. The answer she gave was, surprisingly, the HBO drama “Westworld.”

“What’s not to like, Colin? A land of naked cowboys fornicating. they should have just called it West Hollywood.”

Carvey’s Church Lady made her debut in 1986, and remained a series staple until 1990. The character made appearance on the show several times over the next couple decades, including in 1996, 2000, 2011 and, of course, in 2016.

Her opinions and overreactions recalled nostalgic moments with everyday Catholic grandmothers, and became an instant hit on the show. The character was traditionally conservative, and had her own special catch phrases, along with an affinity for breaking into song.

That, of course, is exactly what Carvey did at the end of his appearance, singing the lyrics to “What a Wonderful World” in the most incorrect way he could possibly muster.
