‘Scream’ Trailer Brings Back Old Favorites for a Bloody New Sequel

Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette are back for the horror film, out on Jan. 14, 2022

The long-awaited “Scream” trailer is finally here, and it begins with a familiar set-up: A teen girl, home alone, gets a phone call that doesn’t end well for her.

Yep, GhostFace is back in the trailer, released Tuesday, but so are a few of his former victims, now looking for revenge: Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, David Arquette as Dewey Riley and Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers. In the trailer, those folks teach a crop of terrified teens the rules to surviving a crazed masked killer.

“I won’t sleep until he’s in the ground,” Campbell’s Prescott vows in the trailer. (That comes soon after she says, “I’m Sydney Prescott, of course I have a gun” — so you know she means business.)

Along with Campbell, Arquette and Cox, Judy Hicks is also returning to the fifth “Scream” film after starring in the original from 1996. They’ll be joined in the film by new cast members Jack Quaid (“The Boys”), Melissa Barrera (“In The Heights”) and Jenna Ortega (“You”).

“Scream 5” — which is officially titled “Scream” — is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (“Ready Or Not”) of the filmmaking duo Radio Silence, and they’re taking over from the late horror master Wes Craven.

“Scream” was directed by Craven and followed a young woman in a small town who was targeted by a killer in a mask, later known as GhostFace, and the film was famous for its tongue-in-cheek, self-aware knowledge of other horror film tropes, not to mention a killer opening sequence featuring Drew Barrymore. Ask her about that scene and she’ll tell you how much Caller ID sales soared after that movie.

“Scream” spawned sequels in 1997, 2000 and 2011, and the films have grossed a collective $608 million at the worldwide box office.

The new film was shot in North Carolina and is produced by Spyglass and Paramount. Paramount will release “Scream” worldwide on Jan. 14, 2022. Check out the first trailer above.
