Saoirse Ronan Rages Against Suburban Machine in Greta Gerwig’s ‘Lady Bird’ Trailer (Video)

Gerwig’s directorial debut has been rocking the fall festival circuit, gaining Oscar buzz

After a buzzy film festival debut, Greta Gerwig’s drama “Lady Bird” is showing the world her stuff with a new trailer.

Saoirse Ronan plays the title character, an aspirational teen with little work ethic who is bracing for college and adulthood, in the first feature effort from writer-director Gerwig (“Frances Ha”).

Ronan is “angry, frustrated and aching to have people recognize the genius that brews just below the surface. She doesn’t quite know what that genius is, just that it’s there,” TheWrap wrote in our Telluride review of the film.

“Because of the fire that burns within her, she’s trying to fly too far and too fast out of the nest,” wrote TheWrap critic Sasha Stone, who compared the film to Mike Nichols’ “The Graduate.”

At first blush, the movie looks like the Ronan showcase it promised to be but also a strong platform for Laurie Metcalf as her furious and demanding mother.
