Sam Champion is heading back to ABC’s “Good Morning America,” just in time to deliver some wintery weather. Unfortunately, it won’t last even as long as the season.
The seven-year show vet will be covering ABC News’ Chief Meteorologist Ginger Zee’s maternity leave during the week of Jan. 11, the show said on Monday. Rob Marciano will be filling in during the rest of Zee’s absence; the 34-year-old gave birth last month to her first child, a son named Adrian Benjamin.
Champion was with ABC itself for 25 years before departing for The Weather Channel. He had passed the torch to Zee during his last “GMA” broadcast on Dec. 4, 2013.
The fan favorite most recently appeared on “GMA” in November during the show’s 40th reunion celebration, which brought co-anchors, news anchors, meteorologists and contributors from the past four decades of “GMA” together in Times Square.
Champion’s “AMHQ” morning show on The Weather Channel experienced more than its share of problems, and the host departed last fall. He’s now set for a primetime series at the cable network, Champion told TheWrap.
