“Classic ‘High critical praise/low ratings,'” host laments

BET has canceled late-night comedy series “The Rundown With Robin Thede.”

The host announced the cancellation herself on Twitter.

“Thanks to my staff/crew for being so dedicated, funny & brilliant,” Thede wrote. “I’m so proud of what we made. And thanks for watching! We did it for all of YOU. Except Ben Carson.”

“At this time BET Networks has decided not to renew ‘The Rundown with Robin Thede.’ We have so much love and respect for our Unicorn and look forward to finding ways to continue in partnership with Robin,” said the network in a statement.

Thede was part of the growing push for diversity in the late-night space, joining the South African-born Trevor Noah as the only hosts of color.

Thede was the lone female African-American late night host. Prior to creating “The Rundown,” Thede was the head writer and panelist for Comedy Central’s short-lived “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore.”

Thede won’t be out for work for too long. She’s set to host the TCA Awards next Saturday, Aug. 4.
