“Riverdale” has been renewed for Season 2 on The CW, TheWrap has learned.
“Riverdale” is set in the present day and is based on the iconic Archie Comics characters. It is described as a surprising and subversive take on Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome façade.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa writes and executive produces along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Jon Goldwater.
Aguirre-Sacasa has previously spoken of a desire for an expanded Archie universe on The CW, perhaps with spinoffs featuring Josie and the Pussycats or Sabrina the Teenage Witch, who will make her debut in the Season 1 finale.
Aguirre-Sacasa also said a potential “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” series in the “Riverdale” universe would be as dark and in the vein of “Rosemary’s Baby.” In other words, nothing like the late ’90s sitcom starring Melissa Joan Hart. (The show aired from 1996 to 2003.)
“Riverdale” airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
