The drought may finally be over for “Outlander” fans, but it looks like the honeymoon period for the show’s lovebirds Jamie and Claire is nearing an end as well.
“The wedding episode was so beautiful and the start of this relationship, but now we get to see it develop,” Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie on the show, said during an episode of TheWrap’s “Drinking With the Stars.”
When the show picks up for the back eight episodes of its first season on Saturday, the newlyweds will find themselves at odds for the first time, Heughan teased. But first, Jamie has to rescue Claire (Caitriona Balfe) from the clutches of Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies), which is where the show left off at the end of the midseason finale.
“We’re going to pick up where we left off, which is Jamie at the window,” said Heughan. “And then we flashback to when Jamie first found out [Claire had been taken], and the process he goes through to get to that point of rescuing her. And from that point on, so much happens. There’s a lot of adventure, a lot of fallout in the relationship between Jamie and Claire and their relationship really gets tested.”
Even after their rocky reunion, Jamie and Claire face even more obstacles the rest of the season, and Heughan teased a storyline that may shock the show’s new viewers. But fans of the book won’t be too surprised.
“There’s some pretty gruesome stuff that happens to him,” Heughan teased of his character. “Where we leave off at the end of the season is a very gray area, but quite satisfying as well.”
“Outlander” returns Saturday, Apr. 4 at 9 p.m. EST on Starz.
