MTV is returning to its roots with a new programming slate of full of upcoming series and development projects involving music and the music industry.
Most notably, the network has ordered to the live music series “Wonderland.” Co-developed with Comedy Central, the completely live series will feature live musical performances and will be hosted by a group of “opinionated tastemakers,” much like the network’s highly influential “TRL,” which went off the air in 2008.
Other music series lined up at the network include series orders for a revamped version of “MTV Unplugged,” which showcases stripped-down performances by popular artists, and a new reality music competition show from producer Mark Burnett. In development is a series of music documentaries called “Year One,” which will chart the careers of major musicians using the network’s own archival footage.
“We’re on a mission to reignite MTV with everything that makes it one of the world’s most iconic brands – its soul of music, its love of pop culture, and its unexpected, groundbreaking creative,” said Sean Atkins, president of MTV, in a statement. “What we share today is just the beginning, but it’s a strong first step in the journey and shows how aggressively we are moving to energize the extraordinary promise of this great brand.”
On the scripted side, the network has ordered the series “Loosely Exactly Nicole,” based on the life of “Girl Code” breakout star Nicole Byer; “Sweet/Vicious,” a dark one-hour dramedy about odd couple vigilantes avenging sexual assault victims on a college campus; and “Mary + Jane,” a comedy about enterprising weed dealers navigating L.A. hipster culture.
The network also has a number of scripted series in development from producers including Pitbull, Mark Burnett and Drew Barrymore.
