‘Moonfall’ Spec Heating Up as Darren Aronofsky Considers Sci-Fi Project (Exclusive)

Aronofsky has a first-look deal at New Regency, though David Weil’s screenplay is out to multiple studios

MV5BNzE2NzExMTM2NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNTA2Nzk0MDE@._V1_SX214_CR0,0,214,317_AL_David Weil’s sci-fi spec script “Moonfall” has Hollywood buzzing this week, having piqued the interest of several top filmmakers including producer Darren Aronofsky, multiple individuals familiar with the situation have told TheWrap.

Represented by CAA and Unified Management, Weil (pictured left) is an up-and-coming writer whose script, “Half Heard in the Stillness,” was voted to the 2013 Black List of Hollywood’s most liked unproduced screenplays.

“Moonfall” is described as a “Fargo”-like thriller set on the moon.

Aronofsky’s has a first-look deal at New Regency, though the script is currently out to multiple studios and could land elsewhere, as Aronofsky is just one of several high-profile talents who has read and liked Weil’s script. While the “Noah” director has had exploratory talks regarding the material, he has yet to commit to the project and is not officially attached to produce “Moonfall” yet, let alone direct.

Just like the real space race back in the 1960s, studios have been in a race to colonize the moon via several big-budget projects in development, and “Moonfall” is said to feature a unique angle rather than the typical point of entry to a sci-fi story set in outer space.

“Weil’s “Half Heard in the Stillness” follows a young man who’s inadvertently rescued after living 10 years in the basement of the child predator who abducted him. He struggles to reunite with his family as the detective in charge of his case investigates the link between his discovery and the recent disappearance of another local boy.

“Stillness” received the same number of votes as fellow 2013 Black List scripts Clint Eastwood‘s “American Sniper” and the Jennifer Aniston movie “Cake.”

Weil, who is also an actor, previously sold a pilot titled “Consent” to Anonymous Content. He’s also represented by attorney Peter Nichols.
