Minnie Driver has been cast as the lead in the ABC comedy pilot “Speechless” from writer Scott Silveri.
Mason Cook has also been cast as one of Driver’s sons in the pilot, which follows a family of a special-needs child that is as good at dealing with the challenges it faces as it is at creating new ones.
Driver, who recently starred in the “About a Boy” adaptation on NBC, will play Maya, the loving but fiercely protective mother of her non-verbal son JJ. She makes it her mission to find the perfect school for him, repeatedly moving her family from town to town in the process.
Cook will play Ray, the youngest of the family’s three boys, who views himself as “the only adult in the family.” The actor’s recent credits include TNT’s “Legends,” as well as “The Goldbergs” and “The Middle” on ABC.
The duo joins Cedric Yarbrough in the pilot from 20th Century Fox TV. The “Goldbergs” alum will play Kenneth, a groundskeeper at Bronxville High who has a run-in with Maya when she throws a fit because the wheelchair ramp doubles as a ramp for a garbage dumpster.
