Michael C. Hall will taste the rainbow this upcoming Super Bowl Sunday. The “Dexter” actor is set to star in a live Broadway musical that is also a Super Bowl advertisement.
Hall will star in “Skittles Commercial: The Broadway Musical,” which will be staged in front of a live audience at The Town Hall in New York on Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. EST, the same day as the Super Bowl.
So is it an actual Super Bowl commercial? Well, yes and no. The play is an actual advertisement for Skittles starring Hall, and it will take place on the same day as the game. But the musical itself is a real, one-time-only performance that will take place in lieu of an actual commercial during the game.
Even Hall is a bit skeptical about the whole idea, saying as much to a therapist in a teaser for the ad (yes, a commercial for a commercial) that promises to “Broadway the Rainbow.”
“Skittles Commercial” the musical is written by playwright and Pulitzer Prize finalist Will Eno in partnership with DDB Worldwide and features a 17-person cast alongside Hall. Proceeds will go to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, a nonprofit organization that awards annual grants that help men, women and children in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., receive lifesaving medications, health care, nutritious meals, counseling and emergency assistance. Skittles will also match this donation.
Last year, Skittles pulled off a similar stunt, making a commercial that starred David Schwimmer, but was only aired for one person.
