Jon Voight thinks “something very serious must have happened” for daughter Angelina Jolie to file for divorce from her husband Brad Pitt on Monday.
“It’s very sad,” Voight told Inside Edition via phone on Tuesday, confirming the news. “Something very serious must have happened for Angelina to make a decision like this.”
He added that he didn’t know why his sometimes estranged daughter had made the decision to end her marriage to Pitt, but said, “It’s a sad thing. Say a little prayer.”
“I am concerned for Angie and the children, and hopefully I’ll be seeing them very soon,” he said.
Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt after just over two years of marriage and 12 years together as a couple.
Jolie listed their official date of separation as Sept. 15. She is asking for physical custody of the couple’s six children and will ask that Pitt receive visitation rights. Pitt officially adopted three of Jolie’s children, while Jolie gave birth to three more children of their own over the course of their relationship.
“Brangelina,” as they were dubbed by the media, met on the set of the film “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” in which they played rival assassins who also happen to be married to each other. There was widespread speculation at the time that their relationship began onset and that Pitt divorced Jennifer Aniston so he could be with Jolie.
They were officially married in a private ceremony at a French chateau in August 2014. In 2015, they co-starred in the drama “By the Sea,” which followed a married couple trying to repair their marriage during a stay at a hotel in 1970’s France.
