HBO has given a series order for an adaptation of Stephen King’s bestselling novel, “The Outsider,” which will star and be produced by Ben Mendelsohn.

The project comes from “The Night Of” co-creator/executive producer Richard PriceJack Bender (“Mr. Mercedes”) Jason Bateman’s Aggregate Films, Temple Hill Entertainment and MRC. Bateman is set to direct the first two episodes.

Here is the logline for the series, per HBO: A seemingly straightforward investigation into the gruesome murder of a local boy leads a seasoned cop and an unorthodox investigator to question everything they believe to be real, as an insidious supernatural force edges its way into the case.

Bateman executive produces “The Outsider” alongside Marty Bowen, Richard Price and Michael Costigan. This marks Aggregate’s second collaboration with MRC following Bateman’s Netflix series “Ozark,” which was recently renewed for a third season.

Mendelsohn just starred in “Robin Hood” as the Sheriff of Nottingham, and will next appear in Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel,” where he will play the villainous Skrull, Talos.
