‘Doctor Who’ Alum Matt Smith Joins ‘Terminator’ Reboot

He will play “a new character with a strong connection to John Connor,” Paramount announced

Matt Smith is headed from one iconic sci-fi franchise to another.

The popular “Doctor Who” star, who just left the legendary British show last year, has been cast in the upcoming “Terminator” reboot, Paramount announced on Friday. He will play a new character with a strong connection to John Connor, and joins a cast that includes Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi and Byung Hun Lee.

Smith recently acted for Ryan Gosling in the actor’s directorial debut.

Alan Taylor will direct the film, which is being called “Terminator: Genesis,” from a screenplay written by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier. The film is due out on July 1, 2015, and is expected to launch a new franchise for Paramount and producers Skydance.
