Disney will release its sequel to “Alice in Wonderland” May 27, 2016, the studio announced on Friday. Johnny Depp will reprise his role as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska will return as Alice.
“Muppets” filmmaker James Bobin will take over directing duties from Tim Burton, working from a script by Linda Woolverton. Joe Roth, Jennifer Todd and Suzanne Todd are all producing.
The first film grossed more than $1 billion at the box office, and the sequel, like the first, will be released in 3D.

Disney also announced its “Jungle Book” movie will open in October of 2015. That movie, which Jon Favreau is directing, will also be in 3D. Justin Marks is writing the screenplay for the movie, which will be a live-action take on Rudyard Kipling’s collection of stories.
There have been several live-action adaptations of the the tale, though the most famous rendition remains the 1967 animated movie.
